I have always loved this quote by Fritz Perl (founder of gestalt therapy)
For me its the essence of mindfulness. Apparently we have somewhere between 80 and 100,000 thoughts every single day. Somedays I think it's more like 150,000 and I don't know about you but I can get so caught up in my thinking, following every thought believing each one to be true. With mindfulness I've been able to take a step back and I've realised that it's generally a waste of time and energy to follow every single thought. People use words like "headwrecked", "cant' stop my head", "can't see the wood for the trees" etc. If this is you then the techniques I share below might just help you
So what's the answer? How do you get out of your head?
Well you get into your body!
Wisdom, knowledge, compassion, power, intuition are all body based. When you ask someone what their intuition is telling them they will generally talk about their "gut feeling" or say "in my heart I know what to do"
However we can become so diconnected from our bodies that we chase our thoughts and can't hear what it's trying to tell us.
The solution: Well get into your body! Yes I know Ellen, but how??! How is different for each person. What works for you might not work for me.
But let me share with you what I use
Number one on my list is the the body scan meditation. I've pimped this a little and I add gratitude into it so that it becomes a kind of grateful awareness of the body. I just love the combination, and people have told me that they love the sense of thanking their bodies when most of the time they just give out to it! Number two is a recent addition that's so simple and so quick that I am now using it all the time! It's called Quick coherent breathing or I like to call it heart coherent breathing. Using 5 to 10 breaths it helps you to get out of your head and access the heart. I've included the directions for it courtesy of the Heart Math Institiute, so give it a try if you wish, you can even do it now, on the bus, no one will know!
Quick Coherence technique (HeartMath Institute)
Step 1: Focus your attention in the area of the heart. Imagine your breath is flowing in and out of your heart or chest area, breathing a little slower and deeper than usual. Suggestion: inhale 5 seconds, exhale 5 seconds or whatever rhythm is comfortable for you.
Step 2: Make a sincere attempt to experience a regenerative feeling such as appreciation or care for someone or something in your life. For example, an accomplishment, a loved one, a pet, a place in nature.
You can use this any time you have a meeting or a decision to make, its a great way of getting quickly out of your head and into your heart.
